The Dirty Side of the Mattress Industry

This has been one of the most fascinating things we've learned in our years in the bedding industry.  Just like any industry, companies are always trying to find new, better, and, most of all, cheaper ways of manufacturing and selling their product.  Some companies have different standards of what they believe to be ethical (that's why we have regulatory laws!).  Just like the food industry, cheaper usually means more harmful for you.

Toxins

One area that has been under scrutiny is fire-retardation.  Seems like a good idea, but with a federal mandate, companies find all kinds of ways (again, usually cheaper ways) to meet the requirement.  So you see materials like Boric Acid used in a mattress that you're going to sleep on every single night!  Or your children will sleep on for their whole lives.  Research is linking these harmful chemicals to everything from skin irritation to even more serious health effects.

If you just went out and bought an inexpensive mattress like everybody else, chances are good that you have something pretty scary in there.  We do not want to perpetuate alarmist tactics, but there is too much research and testimony out there to ignore.  Instead of trying to slip something by consumers just to save a few bucks...we'd rather take the high road and help drive the market toward natural alternatives.

Bleaching

Most standard mattress fabrics are whitened by chlorine bleach. Chlorine will certainly result in a "showroom" whiteness, but has a long life; that is, chlorine remains in the fibers a very long time, is not safe, and does not meet organic standards for certification.

Chlorine bleaching also weakens fibers and causes fabrics in clothing and bedding to breakdown over time, requiring replacement.  Conventional cotton products may be less expensive, but you will need to replace them two to three times more than organic cotton fabrics.  Have you ever had to replace a mattress simply because the outer fabric was falling apart?

Organic cotton in its natural state goes to a natural ecru tint.  Peroxide "whitening" gently lightens the tint to a soft, natural white.

Pests

There has been a lot of research done in the area of mattress pests...everything from dust mites to mold.  No one wants unwanted guests sleeping with them, so we go out of our way to use naturally anti-microbial and pest-resistant materials.  The good news is that most of the foams we use (latex, eco-green visco, green tea) are naturally resistant to pests, without adding any further chemicals or additives.

Human Impact

Another thing most sleepers forget is the impact of their own bodies on their mattress.  The human body can expel as much as 9-12oz of fluids each night.  Go pick up a bottle of water from the fridge...where do you think most of that is going?  Unless you have some kind of protective barrier, it's going in your mattress and staying there.

Also, think of the years' worth of hair, skin cells and other debris that your body naturally gets rid of. If you want to help your natural mattress last, consider a protective cover that completely zips around the entire mattress.  Waterproof, pest-resistant, impentrable and yet it's breathable.  You'll never know it's there.

If you found a bed that was better for the environment, out-performed the competition, and cost the same, why wouldn't you buy it?

This is our driving philosophy. We recognize that organic is more than a trend, it is a permanent shift in the way we live. GreenBeds.com is committed to providing you the best sleep experience you've ever had, without paying more for it. That was always the stigma with "organic," right? Think about the first organic foods that came out. Either they were priced for the financially elite, or they tasted horrible. As we've seen the industry grow along with our collective consciousness, we now have more options than ever. If you go to your local market, and see mass-produced apples right next to organic ones, priced the same...it's a no-brainer, right?

That's what we're fighting for in the bedding and mattress industry: organic transparency. It should be a no-brainer to choose natural, if the product is superior and the price is comparable. We are not trying to "convince" anyone to go natural...this should be obvious by now, since you spend 1/3 of your life in bed. We simply want it to be an option for everyone, without regard to economic or social status. Every person should be able to make their own free choice about what they want to sleep on. If we have to talk anyone into it, we're not doing our job.

Eco-Friendly and Organic

We fully understand that the industry is not where it needs to be, or where it will be even 5 years from now. For now, we have several ways to get your bedding options more natural. Our Luxury Latex line of mattresses are created on an organic scale, leading up to the Mother Nature mattress, which carries the highest Green Scale rating of 100. Made with natural fibers, fabrics and Natural latex, the Luxury Latex line is worth every penny. And they feel incredible! Latex is the sleep material of Kings.

We also carry Keetsa, which approaches "eco-friendly" from a different angle. We know there are many factors when determining the overall ecological footprint of a manufactured product, beyond just the materials used in the item itself. There are transportation, storage and other soft costs all along the way that can't be ignored. Keetsa's ingenious packaging, combined with renewable and natural materials combine to provide one of the best bang-for-your-buck options on the market. Keetsa mattresses feel great and are a lot of fun.

If you already have a mattress, or aren't ready to take the leap just yet, we also offer an extensive line of mattress comfort layers. These are layers of 100% Natural latex, with no added chemicals or layers. These can be placed on top of an existing mattress to freshen up the feel, provide a protective barrier, to your mattress. We also offer European-style latex mattresses for use on a platform bed or other foundation. No frills, just solid support and comfort.

Whatever your reasons for going green, you can be sure that by partnering with GreenBeds.com, you are helping demonstrate the market to manufacturers, which is ultimately what they need to continue making awesome products. You are a part of something big, and we are grateful to join you.

Better Materials

A great bed is greater than the sum of its parts...but we start with great parts anyway. We only use best-in-class foams, fibers and fabrics so you can be sure to get the best in comfort, durability and longevity. There are many ways to cut corners just to save a few bucks, but that always comes back to bite you. We know the industry inside and out, and choose to sell only the very best products.

Competitive Prices

Price is the other side of the equation that every family needs to feel good about. We carry a full array of products, from pillows to comfort layers to full mattress, so there is something for everyone. When comparing to national brands like Select Comfort? and Tempur-Pedic? which make no attempt to move to natural and organic products, we are incredibly competitive. We have Keetsa mattresses starting at $399, and toppers for much less than that. Free shipping is included on all items (including Free White Glove Delivery on Luxury Latex mattresses!). If you're in the market at all, give GreenBeds.com a look. It just might be the best thing you've done in a while.

GreenBeds.com it just makes sense.
